Intro to Strategic Planning: Crafting the future of your nonprofit organization

Leading a nonprofit organization in today’s rapidly changing environment can be challenging, as is navigating a route forward when much of the world we know is shifting and the future remains uncertain.

Strategic planning processes enable organizations to understand their current and past operating states, create a vision for the future, and determine what steps they should take to achieve that vision.

this interactive virtual session, we will introduce participants to the concepts of strategic planning as well as tools to use in an emergent and uncertain environment.

Topics include:

  • Tools and processes to better understand an organization’s current capacities.
  • External trends and forces that will impact organizations moving forward.
  • The process for turning a broad vision into a coherent strategy with well-defined objectives and a plan of activities.
  • The components of the cycle of strategic planning and how to adapt these within a rapidly changing environment.
  • How to develop approaches to keep strategy front and centre, and building ownership throughout the organization.

The nonprofit sector is no stranger to collaboration. Strategic alliances can run the gamut from mergers, amalgamations, and consolidations to administrative consolidation, joint programming, and collaboration.

Successful partnerships can amplify community impact, increase service ability, enhance visibility and accessibility, and ultimately create sustainable, healthy organization. The process of establishing a strategic alliance can be complex, however partnerships are an innovative and forward-thinking option that open up practical solutions for our sector in transition.

This 90-minute workshop explores the many shapes and forms of strategic alliances with case study examples rooted in Alberta’s nonprofit context. This workshop is designed for nonprofit leaders and board members who want to chart a course toward organizational resilience and sustainability.

Some topics we will cover

  • Exploration of the spectrum of strategic alliances: Mergers, amalgamations, consolidations, administrative consolidation, joint programming, collaboration.
  • Deep dives into real-life examples of strategic alliances from Alberta's nonprofit sector.
  • Choosing the right form of partnership for your goals and legal status including helpful decision tools to take with you.
  • The phases of partnership negotiations and the typical stumbling blocks organizations may encounter.

This 1.5 hour virtual workshop will be held online and includes takewaway resources along with practical group dialogue activities.

Leslie Tamagi has more than 25 years experience as CEO of diverse organizations and understands firsthand the complex challenges facing management, staff, and boards in the nonprofit sector. In 2007, she received a Muttart Foundation Fellowship to study risk management in the sector. For more than a decade she has worked with nonprofit organizations, providing training and supporting them through their risk management journeys. She is passionate about supporting leaders to be successful and is currently consulting in the nonprofit sector in many aspects of leadership.
